The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies ~ I Weep for Cinema

Well, ladies and gentlemen, it's time to talk about 'The Hobbit'. After two disappointing films that were mostl pointless filler we have finally reached the dreaded conclusion. I thought I was ready. I thought my expectations were low enough. If there is one skill that Peter Jackson has, it's the unyielding ability to always find a new low. Although in a scene by scene comparison nothing can be worse than the barrel riding scene in 'Desolation of Smaug', as a whole, 'Battle of Five Armies' managed to leave me with an even larger pain in my stomach than any of it's predecessors. Do you want details? Well, I'm going to give them so buckle in. This movie is nothing but a soulless franchise that should be an eternal shame to everyone involved. All of the trite side plots that we have grown to loath continued, at their normal slothful pace. Yes, more vomit inducing dwarf/elf romance, Gandalf and his merry band doing things that have nothing  to ...

Kon Tiki ~ Surprisingly Great!

Good afternoon everyone! Today I watched 'Kon Tiki'. You may remember it from the Oscar nomination last year. I have been interested in watching for all this time but have been beating around the bush. It's a movie about sailing across an ocean on a tiny raft, I feared it may be boring! Thankfully, it wasn't! 'Kon Tiki' is a film about real life events where a group of Scandinavians, mostly Norwegians, attempted to sail from Peru to the Galapagos Islands to prove that that is how the Islands were originally discovered. This rebutted the accepted idea that the islands were discovered from Asia. You see how I could think that it may be somewhat tiresome to watch? This is an incredibly well done movie! I was happily surprised with my viewing experience. Not only was I learning something about scientific and nautical history (don't judge my nerdiness) but it was intense and gripping from beginning to end! As an added bonus the characters don't get on the...

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

So as I'm sure you noticed from the trailer above, they are making another 'Planet of the Apes' movie! It is the sequel to the James Franco one that came out a few years back. I, personally, have always loved all the 'Planet of the Apes' movies and I even enjoyed the most recent one! It will be an exciting adventure, if nothing else! I'm pretty sure I'm biased to like this movie but it looks good to me! What do you think?

'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' and 'World War Z'

Hello movie watchers. I have been contentedly viewing movies this week and I am going to go over the two main ones! Neither movie is jaw-droppingly amazing but they are both fun little romps. First is the new 'Hunger Games' movie, 'Catching Fire'. If you are a book purist and are eager for an accurate book to movie translation, you will be very pleased! Everything is very accurate, the storyline is true to the book, and what is removed is simply for time. If you like the book, I'd imagine you will enjoy the movie. If you've never read the book you will probably be a bit surprised about the regurgitated story. The second 'Hunger Games' story is a very close mirror of the first one. There are several scenes that are practically identical to the first movie. Because of this fact the movie was a bit 'meh' for me. However well done it was couldn't make up for the cookie cutter story line. That, and the fact that I did get a bit tired of watchin...

Thor: The Dark World ~ A Smashing Good Time

Today the new 'Thor' movie hit the theatres. I, being the nerd I am, hastened to see what adventures and perils awaited Thor and the gang. All in all, I enjoyed myself! This movie succeeds because of the cast/characters. They are all gold and the chemistry is delicious! Even when the world is crashing down around their ears, there is humor and wit. I appreciate that! The interactions between Loki and Thor are simply perfect. The story itself is slow to start. It's worth it though, in my opinion. There is a lot of groundwork to lay out and it takes some time. Once things get going it doesn't slow down! You get to see a lot more of Asgard and Thor's world in general which is a very nice treat. The part that is on Earth is all set in London which adds a certain international element. The villains were Dark Elves which were surprisingly creepy! I literally shivered once. Their pure darkness was enough to make Loki seem like a beacon of light. They were so cute i...

Two Duds ~ 'Now You See Me' and 'The Great Gatsby'

Hello movie world! Today I have two movies that I think should be skipped entirely. This is for the people who are waiting for things to come out on DVD. I did that, too, and I wasted a few Netflix shipments on these mongrels. Everyone you get to see bicker for the entire film. First, is 'Now You See Me'. This movie is bang-your-head-against the-wall boring, completely flat in character and plot development, and sadly filled with good actors shelling out cheap, hollow acting. It's not even exciting! You just watch, essentially, the same heist go down three times broken up by a boring monologue in between that explains things. It's like a puzzle for dummies! They don't even give you enough time to become confused before they show you all the answers. This, paired with the fact that any major twists are either seriously predictable, or such cop-outs that they are groan-worthy, makes 'Now You See Me' an obvious skip. Just don't waste your time! Sec...

Three Wild Cards

Hello, movie lovers! I have three trailers today. They are all incredibly different but they have something in common. The trailers intrigue me but I just can't decide whether or not I think they will be good. Three wild cards. First I have 'The Railway Man'. Trailer first. The movie doesn't have a poster yet. This is the book cover! All right. So, it definitely piques my interest but it has the possibility to be so dark. I certain level of darkness is bound to be present but I hope they leave a lot to the imagination. The fact that it is based on a true story, naturally, makes me want to see it ten times more then if it were not. Sadly, I couldn't find a movie rating on the Internet. If it's 'R' we are probably in for some grit and torture. I'm pretty sure curiosity is going to get the best of me, I'll let you know the aftermath! Next, we have 'Last Days On Mars'. Yes, it's a Sci-Fi movie set on Mars. It's an ...

The Young and Prodigious Spivet

Hello all! I have a trailer today. When I found this trailer, I was so thrilled. I felt like I had just discovered buried treasure. It's made by the French in English. So that's why there are French subtitles on the trailer. Here we go! It's just so charming! The cinematography grabbed my attention and the story grabbed my heart. I feel like the trailer really stands on its own feet. The only real question is Helena Bonham Carter, Hollywood's wild card. I think she'll do great. We all know she is capable of sane, serious roles, and we get to see that I think. All in all, keep your eyes out for this one! I expect great things!

Mud ~ Too Many Flaws

Hi all. Last night I watched 'Mud'. I was quite excited for this movie, I even  blogged about the trailer.  Sadly, the movie didn't quite stand up to the trailer. It's a very strange situation. It's not that it wasn't good, it's that there was too much bad. A shame really. I'm going to start with the good things. The acting, especially McConaughey, was impressive to say the least. He was gritty and pensive. Surprisingly, he was only shirtless for maybe 5-10 minutes of the film! No, in all seriousness, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about McConaughey's performance. Good job buddy! Frankly, most all the technical aspects of 'Mud' are great. Cinematography, costumes, and sets etc. It's this fact, the fact that is was so well done in most ways, that makes it such a terrible shame to have its two flaws. Told you so. The two flaws! (Dramatic music) Flaw number one! The completely unnecessary presence of filth in this movie. By...

Jack The Giant Slayer ~ Better Than I Expected

Well, I am home safe and sound from my trip! My in flight movie was 'Jack the Giant Slayer' and seeing as how I  recommended it in a previous post  I thought it best to do a review. This movie was fun, fun, and fun! Adventure and a bit of suspense with enough wit and comedy to make it a charming film. It is not silly or childish, which I incredibly appreciate. ( Especially after the great disappointment of  'Oz the Great and Powerful' )  If anything, it was a bit more mature then I expected! There was a lot more death and dismemberment then I thought there would be. It was personal deaths as well, characters you know being eaten 'Jurassic Park' style. I just have to touch on Nicholas Hoult, the actor who played Jack. I am seriously starting to love this guy! I mean, I've known about his since he was a kid, and he has always had potential. Now he is really doing great! I just saw him a few months ago in  'Warm Bodies' . Now having seen two mov...

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty

Hi All. I have quite the unique trailer this week. At least I think so. It's called 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty'. Here we go! Okay, so I am totally in love with the idea of this movie. An average office worker who has a vivid, and adventurous, imagination who then has to go on a real exploit? This is right up my alley. Seriously! On top of that the cinematography looks really cool. They are really utilizing the fact that they are in his imagination. I love it! Aww, Christmas Day? Cute. :) The possible downside is Ben Stiller. Sometimes I can really despise the guy, but he can surprise me too. I think that this is quite a bit more serious then his usual work, and I like that. It's an adventure with a meaning! Also, some part of me can respect Stiller a little more now that he's aged a bit. I have a lot of hope for him in this part. As for the plot itself, I haven't read the original short story. Yet. I think I might just have too. I am incredibly...

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

So, I normally shy away from Teen Pop Fiction, especially when it's been turned into a movie. This time I didn't. I was curious about 'The Hunger Games' series so I read them, then I saw the first movie. I could write an incredibly massive post just about my issues with the writing style of the book, but I won't. You're welcome. Right now, this post, is just about the trailer and expectations for the second film. Let's look at the trailer shall we? I'm sorry but it looks good! I know that the story is better in 'Catching Fire'. It's more revolution, political drama, and behind the scenes finagling. I think it's safe to say that this is going to be an exciting, engrossing movie that will not disappoint. I'm weirdly excited for it!

How To Know I'm Not Your Average Girl...

I have two trailers today. I actually laughed out loud to myself when I realized how different they are and that I was going to post about them at the same time! No one can honestly accuse me of having ordinary taste, that's for sure! I am going to start with 'Escape Plan'. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, together, escaping from prison. Trailer first! It just looks so fun! I can't help myself. Seriously, I know that they have worked together on 'The Expendables' but those movies were too much for me. I can't get into them. This looks like it's a bit closer to my speed. It won't be super thought provoking and whatnot but this time I don't care! I love a good action romp and I think 'Escape Plan' will fit the bill quite nicely. Now, in the complete opposite part of the cinema world, we have 'Austenland'. Yes, it's a Jane Austin movie, sort of. Just to be clear, I am not one of those Austin obsessed g...

RED 2 ~ Hilarious, Adventerous, and Fun!

Well, I couldn't help myself. I had to see 'RED 2' opening day. I absolutely adored the first one and, as I wrote about in a  previous post,  I was incredibly excited for the second one. This movie is fantastic! The whole gang is together again for another grand adventure. If you liked the first 'RED' you will enjoy this movie. The hilarious chemistry between Willis, Malkovich, and Parker is sharp and clever. The story is exciting, has some good twists, and is generally lighthearted and fun! Naturally, it's not as good as the first one but it's a legit sequel that can stand on its own feet. I can't express how much I love Malkovich in this movie. This is not a serious movie. You don't take things incredibly seriously, you just have fun. If you can do that you will enjoy yourself! I, personally, found myself quite engrossed in the story by the end. Holding my breath! The thing that sets 'RED' and 'RED 2' apart is the character...

Prisoners

Happy Saturday everybody! Today I have a trailer for a suspense/thriller/drama. 'Prisoners'. Let's watch. Now, I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this one. Frankly, if they have something garish happen to small children I'm out. If they are just trapped somewhere, I'll be fine. If they are tortured in any way then no, not cool Hollywood! It looks like they are going to have a lot of moral dilemma's. How far are you willing to go to rescue your children? Most parents will say that they will do anything for their kids, but to they mean it? I think this movie will be interesting, and very emotional. I absolutely love the idea of Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Terrence Howard all in the same movie. I am very excited to see how they work off of each other. Of course, the fact that Gyllenhaal's character is named "Detective Loki" cracks me up. It seems like a joke or something! Jackman and Howard look like they are going to flex thei...

Machete Kills

So today I found the trailer for 'Machete Kills'. It looks SO BAD that I have to blog about it. As you probably have noticed, I don't generally attack movies just for fun so you understand how special an occasion this is. You should watch the absolutely terrible trailer first. You probably see what I mean by terrible now. For the heck of it let's look at it a little more closely! Yes, OH MY GOSH, that's Charlie Sheen. He has decided to use his birth name instead of his stage name. I don't know what he is trying to pull, but it can't be good can it? He either thinks that people are stupid enough to not recognize him with a different name, therefore giving him a clean slate, or that everyone is going to be SO impressed that he is  bravely  using his ethnic name that we all forget his terrible, terrible history. I suppose he could also just be being crazy again or trying a gauche publicity stunt to publicise a movie that is heavily geared for the Latino...

The Family

Hello everyone. Happy Summer! Today I have a trailer for a Comedy, or perhaps a bit of a Dark Comedy. The movie is 'The Family'. It's about a family, who was a part of the mob, that testified for the government and had to go into the Witness Protection Program. This ex-mob family is now hiding out in France and causing trouble. Let's take a look at the trailer. I might be crazy, but I just love mob movies! This one looks like a lot of fun. Ever so slightly spoofy I'd expect, which I like. I love the way the kids seem to have picked up how to take care of business "the family way". A little extortion here, some bruising there, all in a days work. You rock that beard! The first thing I noticed was Robert De Niro. I love it! Seeing him in a mafia roll never gets old. Of course, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones are cool too, but De Niro wins! Somehow that guy just gets better and better with age. It's not rated yet but from the looks of ...

Man of Steel ~ Neither Great Nor Terrible

Last night, a fantastic friend of mine dropped by my house and gave me some early viewing tickets to see 'Man of Steel'.  I felt like an absolute posh person walking past all the people in line for the midnight to go to my theatre at 7 p.m. You have to enjoy the little things in life right? Enough about me, on to the review! 'Man of Steel', as I'm sure you know, is yet another Superman origin story. Everyone is pretty well acquainted with the general idea of this story but they want to keep telling it to us! Well, they did an all right job. The plot wasn't bad but I wasn't invested either. The character development, I felt, was REALLY shallow. Because of this I was kinda 'meh' throughout the film. Visually, it was very explosive. I couldn't even begin to count how many massive fiery explosions there were. Honestly, it reminded me of the 'Trasnformers' movies because there were SO MANY fight scenes that were just swirling CGI fes...

Star Trek Into Darkness ~ Nerd Heaven!

I know I'm a bit delayed on this review. The movie has been out a few weeks but I've been out of town and have only now had the opportunity to go to the theatre. Anyway, here goes! 'Star Trek Into Darkness' is one of those movies I have been anticipating for some time now. As you may remember, I wrote about the trailer when it first came out.  I was thoroughly satisfied and frankly overjoyed with this movie! If you are into 'Star Trek' this movie should satisfy any nerdy cravings! Let's get down to business. Let's start with the characters themselves; they were all very satisfying! Chris Pine seems more confident and comfortable in his role as Kirk, Zachary Quinto rocks it as Spock, and Simon Pegg is the perfect comic relief as Scotty. To my great joy, Uhura WASN'T purely present as a cheap thrill for 13 year old boys. Her character actually got to do some real work and be a valuable team member. Good job Uhura! Of course, the primary question is...

Ender's Game

Today I stumbled upon this interesting little trailer. Let's watch it first. This trailer first grabbed my attention with the cast! I'm sorry, but if Harrison Ford is in a movie I am nearly ALWAYS going to watch it. Even besides him there is quite the talented cast. Ben Kingsley and Asa Butterfield are working together again which is fantastic! Asa, as you may remember, was Hugo in 'Hugo'. Those two were a great pair. I don't know if they will interact much in this movie but I'm glad all the same. That was just the hook for me though. After seeing the trailer, I admit, I'm intrigued! Aliens, outer space, some sort of galactic war; it sounds good to me! As far as I can tell Ford starts training children as soldiers because they are unpredictable to the aliens. A little dark, but I can deal with it. I know it was a very popular book series which means that they should have plenty of material. Frankly, I just have a good feeling about this movie. I hope I...
