Philomena ~ A Conversation Starter

Good morning and happy Saturday! As per usual, before the Oscars I tend to start catching whatever stray nominees I can. This time I saw 'Philomena'. I  posted the trailer  a while ago in case you don't remember. The rough story is that a young girl became pregnant in a fling and was forced to give him up for adoption and fifty years later she is trying to find him. She, being Philomena, has attempted to find him before with no luck. This time she has the help of an ex-BBC reporter who is quite a bit more forceful with his questions. Last but not least, this is based on a chillingly true story. There are many interesting and shocking twists in this story, which I shall not spoil. What's important is that it's a good story! 'Philomena' held my attention from start to finish. Best of all it touches on a vast  array of hot-button topics. This is why I call it a conversation starter. Oh the discussions I had, and could still have, about the various ...

Kon Tiki ~ Surprisingly Great!

Good afternoon everyone! Today I watched 'Kon Tiki'. You may remember it from the Oscar nomination last year. I have been interested in watching for all this time but have been beating around the bush. It's a movie about sailing across an ocean on a tiny raft, I feared it may be boring! Thankfully, it wasn't! 'Kon Tiki' is a film about real life events where a group of Scandinavians, mostly Norwegians, attempted to sail from Peru to the Galapagos Islands to prove that that is how the Islands were originally discovered. This rebutted the accepted idea that the islands were discovered from Asia. You see how I could think that it may be somewhat tiresome to watch? This is an incredibly well done movie! I was happily surprised with my viewing experience. Not only was I learning something about scientific and nautical history (don't judge my nerdiness) but it was intense and gripping from beginning to end! As an added bonus the characters don't get on the...

'Philomena' and 'One Chance'

Hello all! I have two interesting trailers for you today. They are both based on true stories and they are both British in origin. I have a good feeling about them! First is 'Philomena'. It contains Dame Judi Dench so you can commence your excitement now! Let's take a peak at the trailer shall we? It's very promising! It looks well done all the way around plus the story is intriguing, at least for me. I hope it ends well. If it's a nice heartwarming ending I think I'll like it substantially more then if it were to be tragic! That's really the thick and thin of it. I have high hopes! Second is 'One Chance'. This movie looks so inspiring! Part of my initial positive reaction was the cast. James Cordon AKA Craig from Doctor Who is the star and his father is played by Colm Meaney who will always be O'Brien from 'Star Trek the Next Generation'. Here is the trailer! Sometimes you just feel like an uplifting movie and I think '...

The Fifth Estate ~ A Mind Game

'The Fifth Estate' or as I have been calling it 'The Assange Wikileaks' movie. It came out this weekend and curiosity got the best of me. There was no way I wasn't going to see this movie opening day. I feel like there are an incredible amount of angles with which we could look with this film. It's such a complex topic. I am going to look at it piece by piece. Storyline first. It's what's most important. The plot is very engrossing. I found myself very interested in what was happening. It doesn't start at the founding of the Wikileaks site but in fact just maybe six or eight months before the big massive leak that happened a few years back. I feel like I have to mention that it is a thinking movie. I could see someone getting bored or confused. That being said, I wasn't ever bored or confused. I did however seriously wonder how accurate it was. Not because it struck me as inaccurate (though there were many moments where I suspected slander...

Belle

It's a beautiful fall morning and I have a very charming looking trailer for today. The name of the movie is 'Belle' it's a Period Piece, and is set in England. It's based on a true story. Let's take a look shall we? It looks well done, gorgeous, and thought provoking. All things that I heartily appreciate in a good film. The story is quite unique and I find myself curious about how it will end. The feel of the trailer reminds me of the movie 'Amazing Grace' which tackles a somewhat different angle on the same general topic. If it's anything like that then this will be a good movie! I can't help but chuckle at the presence of Tom Felton. The Draco Malfoy actor from 'Harry Potter' always seems to play the bad guy. It's a shame really. I'd love to see him play a hero. All in all, I was charmed just enough by this trailer for me to decide to share it with everyone. I'm rather looking forward to seeing it!

Captain Phillips ~ Magnificent

It's that kind of day again! 'Captain Phillips' has been released, I have rushed out to see it at the very first showing, and now I have plenty to say about it! You may remember that I guessed that it would be pretty great when I blogged about the trailer.  Well, I wasn't disappointed, let me put it that way! 'Captain Phillips', as you may already know, is a movie about the real life events that happened a few years back when the Somali Pirates attacked and captured an American freighter. You might remember the story being pasted all over the news. If you followed the story, you probably already know how it ends. That doesn't matter at all. This movie is gripping, chilling, and in some strange way, beautiful. I grew attached to so many character very quickly! Every single scene has you holding your breath, fully involved in what is happening on screen. Truly, when the scene of the pirates boarding the ship came on screen, it was the quietest I've ever ...

Three Wild Cards

Hello, movie lovers! I have three trailers today. They are all incredibly different but they have something in common. The trailers intrigue me but I just can't decide whether or not I think they will be good. Three wild cards. First I have 'The Railway Man'. Trailer first. The movie doesn't have a poster yet. This is the book cover! All right. So, it definitely piques my interest but it has the possibility to be so dark. I certain level of darkness is bound to be present but I hope they leave a lot to the imagination. The fact that it is based on a true story, naturally, makes me want to see it ten times more then if it were not. Sadly, I couldn't find a movie rating on the Internet. If it's 'R' we are probably in for some grit and torture. I'm pretty sure curiosity is going to get the best of me, I'll let you know the aftermath! Next, we have 'Last Days On Mars'. Yes, it's a Sci-Fi movie set on Mars. It's an ...

The Sapphires ~ A Real Gem (Get it?)

Hello all! I have a movie review for you today. The movie is 'The Sapphires'. As you may remember, I  recommended this movie previously in a post.  Let's just say I wasn't disappointed! 'The Sapphires'. A movie about four Aboriginal girls in Australia. Three sisters and one cousin. These four girls can sing incredibly well together. They have a few things stacked against them though; They're black in the 1960's and they aren't polished as a music act. They can't do anything about the black bit, but upon meeting an enthusiastic man who agrees to be their manager, their career begins to really grow. This manager switches them from Country/Western music to Soul and teaches them some choreography. Oh, I almost forgot to mention one last thing! They go out to perform for the US troops in Vietnam. That ups the stakes a bit, doesn't it? This movie is simply great! My favorite thing about it is the characters. They are very unique, believab...

'The Book Thief' and 'The Monuments Men'

Hello everyone! Today I have two movies that are both very different and incredibly similar. They are both set during WWII. One is set within Nazi Germany and the other is set in Germany's path of conquest. I am going to start with 'The Book Thief' and save my favorite for last. Trailer first shall we? It looks SO intriguing! Every story becomes ten times more intense when it is set in Germany during WWII. We have all the stresses of adoption plus the fact that they are harbouring a Jewish man. I must say, the first thing that I notice is Geoffrey Rush. That man has mad acting skills and he usually chooses really good scripts. It looks good and I am in the mood for a movie like this to come out. Something with a lot of heart. I'm excited! Next we have 'The Monuments Men'. A movie about the men who tried to preserve as much history and art as possible across Europe before Hitler got there and destroyed it all. Unsung heroes if you ask me. This loo...

Into The White ~ Thumbs Up!

As you may remember, a few month back I  posted the trailer for 'Into The White'.  Well, I watched it last night and I must say, I wasn't disappointed! If anything, this movie was even better then I expected. Let's get into some details shall we? This is a serious movie. Yes, there are some light moments, but the majority is tense and attention grabbing. I was expecting a bit more hiking about in the Norwegian countryside but no. Most of the movie is set in one, tiny, hunting cabin during WWII. The basic premise is that a British plane and a German plane shoot each other down over Norway. The both crash within three or four miles of each other and both crews end up at the same cabin. There are three Germans and two Englishmen. The Germans have more people and pistols so they take the British as POW's. It's a bit silly really, they are all trying to survive together but one group must be in charge. The story then follows all the little power struggles, surviv...

Saving Mr. Banks

All right people, it's trailer time! Today we have the story of Walt Disney creating 'Mary Poppins'. Here's the trailer. Just try and tell me that doesn't looks good! I'm so excited! It looks incredibly interesting, well acted, beautifully done, and just plain great! I absolutely love the idea of Tom Hanks playing Disney, he'll do a fantastic job. It looks whimsical and witty and I think it will capture that glorious spirit we all know Walt Disney had. The story itself is so intriguing! How did 'Mary Poppins' come to be? I don't know about you, but I want to find out. Honestly, I have very little to say besides that it looks extremely promising! UPDATE: I have Since seen this movie and written a review,  here.

The Butler

I have found a new trailer! It's called 'The Butler'. Trailer first! The cast alone sells this movie. There are so many big name actors in one place! I know I have to see it! If you are a regular reader you know that I do love a good historical drama that is based on real events. Honestly, I don't see how this movie can really disappoint. It will be heart-wrenching, thought-provoking, and very well acted.  The only real variable is the story itself. The way I see it is: It must be a story worth telling if they got all those actors together for it. Anyone else getting a good feeling about this one?

Haute Cuisine

I have a quick trailer post today. Here is 'Haute Cuisine'. I feel like the trailer give you very little insight into the actual  plot  though it gives you plenty of information about how the movie will feel.  Honestly, I'm not sure whether the primary spoken language is French or English. None the less, I have a good feeling about this trailer. I suppose that's a given, I wouldn't be posting it if I didn't think it would be good! Boiled down I think that it will be an interesting, charming, fun, and mouthwatering movie. Also, it looks beautiful. If the rest of the film shares the same cinematography then we are in for a treat! Frankly, I have a sweet spot for cooking movies and this definitely fits the bill! I know I'm excited to watch it!

Captain Phillips

Hello, all! I have found another promising movie to keep on your radar! Today, we are talking about 'Captain Phillips'. Probably, you remember that dramatic incident a few years back, in 2009, with the Somali Pirates. All that business with the hostages and the U.S. Navy was pretty well covered by the news when it happened. Well, if you missed it, there is going to be a movie about it! What we have here is the true story of a modern day pirate attack on a U.S. vessel. Starring Tom Hanks. To me, that sounds like a recipe for gold! Let's have a look at the trailer. Looks like we have a well made, intense, action/drama coming our way! I'll be back with more movie news soon. Bye, for now. UPDATE: I have since seen this movie and  written a review.

The Sapphires

All right people! I have found another trailer to be excited about! I know I'm excited. It has my golden combination, period piece based on a true story! This one is very unique though, it's set in 68', in Australia, and is about four aboriginal sisters who want to be professional singers. Try and tell me that doesn't sound interesting! They find a manager who switches their genre from country/western to soul, because that's all they could sell back then I suppose. The lot of them end up in Vietnam singing for the troops. I might be jumping the gun but I think that this is going to be a great movie! If the trailer is an honest representation we are in for a treat. It looks funny, witty, clever, heartfelt, and in all likelihood inspiring! Let's hope for the best! Here is the trailer. UPDATE: I have since seen the movie and  written a review.

Into the White

Ya just want to pinch those cheeks! As per usual, a period piece based on true story has caught my eye! Here we have a WWII movie where two planes from opposing sides are shot down in the wild cold of Norway and are forced to live in the same cabin for survivals sake.  Intriguing , right? I know I'm interested! So, you have probably recognized the red haired guy on the poster. Yes, it's Rupert Grint AKA Ron Weasley from the 'Harry Potter' series. He sure has grown up fast! You probably remember him as the fresh faced youth in the first "Harry Potter' installment. As far as I know this is the first truly serious role he has played. There have been a few semi-serious roles, but nothing quite like this. I hope he pulls it off! Putting that aside, I think we might have a good film on our hands. I don't know where the story will go or if they even survive. I'm assuming they will eventually bond... or kill each other. It should be interesting howeve...
