Hello all! Today I am going to be discussing British Mini-Series'. When I say British, I am taking that lightly. I pretty much considered anything with accents, set in the UK. Naturally, I hope to choose shows actually made there but a few American made ones may have snuck through.
It would be very easy to jump in with 'Downton Abby' or 'North and South' but I am trying for things off the beaten path. Also, saying, "Downton Abby is good!' is like saying, "One needs air to breath!". It's obvious and understood by all.
I am going to start with 'Horatio Hornblower'. 'Horatio Hornblower' is set in the early 1800's upon various naval ships. The story follows Horatio on his journey through the British naval ranks. We see countless battles, sword fighting, spying, mutiny, and everything else you could want from a decent adventure at sea. It is INCREDIBLY addicting. I found myself watching several episodes a night and caring deeply for every character. Also, the costumes, sets, and writing are fantastic! All in all this show is pure gold and I would recommend it to everyone!
Next is 'Going Postal'. Quirky and offbeat are the first words that jump to mind when I think on this mini -series. The main protagonist is Moist Von Lipwig, a very accomplished con man who is forced to work in the post office after he is caught and tried. It's not as simple as that though. The post office has been shut down for years and has a comical amount of backlog, filling every shelf and most rooms to the brim. Also, it is set in Industrial Revolution era England, sorta. Things like Werewolves and Golems are commonplace, walking the streets freely, which make for a whimsical atmosphere that is quite delightful! The costumes are not 'accurate' but they are beautifully done. You won't find high end graphics or anything like that but it doesn't matter, 'Going Postal' is good enough not to need it. Again, I heavily recommend this for a lighthearted, funny, romp.
Lastly is 'Neverland. As you may have guessed 'Neverland' is an adaptation of the classic 'Peter Pan' story. Honestly, it's an origin story, starting in London with Peter and the lost boys running around as pickpockets under the care of Hook. Very Fagan from 'Oliver Twist'. I wouldn't say it is accurate and honestly, if you are a purist, this show will probably peeve you. The writers took great liberty with a story most of us know well. I for one didn't mind a bit. Growing up I watched Robin Williems' 'Hook' countless times before I ever saw a classic rendition and I have no care about 'how things are supposed to go'. With that in mind, I thoroughly enjoyed 'Neverland'! Everything was very well done from top to bottom. I'm sure you can probably imagine the basic gist of the story, 'How did Peter and Hook become the characters we know so well today?'. In the show there are many things you will recognize from classic stories as well as many new ideas out of left field. It's an adventure filled with peril and fun! Obviously I liked it or I wouldn't be featuring it right now! I think it's good, give it a watch!
That concludes my suggestions for today!
