Austenland ~ My Valentine's Day Movie

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! I was trying to decide what movie to highlight for today when I noticed 'Austenland' in the new release section on iTunes. I figured that there really wasn't a better day to give it a whirl then today and I've just finished watching it now! You may recall that I shared the trailer with you  some time ago. Let's talk about the movie shall we? 'Austenland' was an enjoyable watch! I feel like I must warn up front that it was a touch more crude than I would have liked. Honestly, I don't ever like crudeness in movies. It was unnecessary and childish but thankfully easily forgotten. In the movies favor, I think that the good was enough to outweigh the bad. Moving on! The story is rather simple. Jane is a thirty something American woman who is dangerously obsessed with all things Austen. Specifically, Mr. Darcy. She decides to spend her life savings to go to a themed, role-play based vacation in England where every guest...

'Philomena' and 'One Chance'

Hello all! I have two interesting trailers for you today. They are both based on true stories and they are both British in origin. I have a good feeling about them! First is 'Philomena'. It contains Dame Judi Dench so you can commence your excitement now! Let's take a peak at the trailer shall we? It's very promising! It looks well done all the way around plus the story is intriguing, at least for me. I hope it ends well. If it's a nice heartwarming ending I think I'll like it substantially more then if it were to be tragic! That's really the thick and thin of it. I have high hopes! Second is 'One Chance'. This movie looks so inspiring! Part of my initial positive reaction was the cast. James Cordon AKA Craig from Doctor Who is the star and his father is played by Colm Meaney who will always be O'Brien from 'Star Trek the Next Generation'. Here is the trailer! Sometimes you just feel like an uplifting movie and I think '...

Into The White ~ Thumbs Up!

As you may remember, a few month back I  posted the trailer for 'Into The White'.  Well, I watched it last night and I must say, I wasn't disappointed! If anything, this movie was even better then I expected. Let's get into some details shall we? This is a serious movie. Yes, there are some light moments, but the majority is tense and attention grabbing. I was expecting a bit more hiking about in the Norwegian countryside but no. Most of the movie is set in one, tiny, hunting cabin during WWII. The basic premise is that a British plane and a German plane shoot each other down over Norway. The both crash within three or four miles of each other and both crews end up at the same cabin. There are three Germans and two Englishmen. The Germans have more people and pistols so they take the British as POW's. It's a bit silly really, they are all trying to survive together but one group must be in charge. The story then follows all the little power struggles, surviv...

How To Know I'm Not Your Average Girl...

I have two trailers today. I actually laughed out loud to myself when I realized how different they are and that I was going to post about them at the same time! No one can honestly accuse me of having ordinary taste, that's for sure! I am going to start with 'Escape Plan'. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, together, escaping from prison. Trailer first! It just looks so fun! I can't help myself. Seriously, I know that they have worked together on 'The Expendables' but those movies were too much for me. I can't get into them. This looks like it's a bit closer to my speed. It won't be super thought provoking and whatnot but this time I don't care! I love a good action romp and I think 'Escape Plan' will fit the bill quite nicely. Now, in the complete opposite part of the cinema world, we have 'Austenland'. Yes, it's a Jane Austin movie, sort of. Just to be clear, I am not one of those Austin obsessed g...

The Scapegoat

Hi all! I have found a delightful little gem. Today, we will be talking about 'The Scapegoat'. This movie turned out to be an unknown happy surprise hiding in the back of Netflix! 'The Scapegoat' is a movie about two men who, by chance, meet each other and realize that they are exactly identical in appearance. One is from a wealthy aristocratic family who runs a foundry while the other is a poor schoolteacher. Johnny and John, respectively. At first I was expecting a 'Prince and the Pauper' storyline but I was happily surprised! After an evening of chatting and deciding that they have no familial ties, the poor man falls asleep. In the morning he wakes to discover that all of his belongings have been stolen and replaced with the things of the rich man and there is a butler at the door prepared to drive him "home". He is now thrust into the life of his rich counterpart. Naturally, at first he tries to explain what has happened but the entire household...

The Angels' Share

Okay everyone, I've found another good one! Trailer first. Did I mention kilts? You see what I mean? You are interested, don't deny it! Unique, quirky, funny, and Scottish! A new father, who is down on his luck, tries to find a way to support his family? Sounds interesting. What are his means for supporting his family? By stealing tiny portions of incredibly expensive whiskey of course. Bingo! They've just found a novel idea. Young Robbie discovers that he has a rare talent for whiskey tasting, so naturally he puts it to 'good' use. From the trailer I would say that this is going to be a feel good movie that makes you happy about life. This movie is so terribly up my alley I can't even express how pleased I am to see that it exists! Heist movie? Good. Rags to riches plot with redemption undertones? Great. Quirky story with what appears to be great writing? Fantastic! Set in Scotland with at least some beautiful scenery? I am SO EXCITED! Keep your eye on ...

Star Trek: Into Darkness

The time has come to talk about 'Star Trek'.  Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the previous 'Star Trek' and I am hoping for a legit encore performance!  Here is the trailer I will be discussing. It looks pretty good right? I find very little to criticize and plenty to be happy about. The exception is one simple, tiny, part of the trailer. Checkov is wearing a red shirt. They better not kill him. Seriously, he is one of my favorite characters, I would probably cry. Moving on... Besides that I see fabulous graphics, vivid shots of Chris Pine's blue eyes (if you've got 'em, flaunt 'em.), and general 'Star Trek'-y awesomeness! We do have a few shots of our new villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. The identity of Cumberbatch's character isn't revealed as of yet. I've heard whisperings of Khan around. For every 'Khan' whisper there is a 'It's definitely NOT Khan' whisper so I'm not yet sure. We also k...

'Skyfall' and 'Red Dawn'

'Skyfall' and 'Red Dawn' are both movies that I wrote about before they were released and I guessed they would be great. After having seen both of them I am going to touch on them again, starting with 'Skyfall'. 'Skyfall', the new Bond movie. Wow. I will start with 2 thumbs up! I saw it with three other people and the general consensus was that this might  be the best Bond to date. It's that good. It was jam packed with fantastic scenes! There were several immense explosions, hand to hand combat, high stress gunfights, and even a car chase or two! Javier Bardem knocks it out of the park as the villain! I absolutely loved him! He played the perfect balance between cold and calculated vs. light hearted and almost jovial. Unlike 'Quantom of Solice', I could actually follow the plot without constantly feeling like I was probably missing something, or spending way too much brain power. Another major bonus for me is that it was primarily set i...

It's BRITISH Time!

Hello all! Today I am going to be discussing British Mini-Series'. When I say British, I am taking that lightly. I pretty much considered anything with accents, set in the UK. Naturally, I hope to choose shows actually made there but a few American made ones may have snuck through. It would be very easy to jump in with 'Downton Abby' or 'North and South' but I am trying for things off the beaten path. Also, saying, "Downton Abby is good!' is like saying, "One needs air to breath!". It's obvious and understood by all. I am going to start with 'Horatio Hornblower'. 'Horatio Hornblower' is set in the early 1800's upon various naval ships. The story follows Horatio on his journey through the British naval ranks. We see countless battles, sword fighting, spying, mutiny, and everything else you could want from a decent adventure at sea. It is INCREDIBLY addicting. I found myself watching several episodes a night and caring ...
